There had come a time in my life when I couldn’t sleep properly. I would wake up tired due to a disturbed sleep. I would wake up in between at night and then toss and turn till early hours of morning, then fall asleep to wake groggy and sleep deprived when my alarm would go off.

I started sleeping in the noon time to fill up on my sleep. This made me lie wide awake at night at my normal sleeping time and I would fall asleep later and later; ultimately ending up with lesser sleep.

My other problem was that I didn’t get  a sound, undisturbed sleep.

This was all related to stress, depression and over thinking that was inhabiting my head all the time.

And because of all this, my productivity was at a low-end. I couldn’t concentrate on things to do, I had the feeling that I was forgetting more and more, and there was a general lack of interest in my daily chores.

Slowly with some meditation, walking routine and healthy eating, I was able to cut down on some of my stress – both mental and physical. Next to go was some junk food and aerated drinks from my plate while some healthier options were added onto it.

Breathing exercises some reading, eating dinner by 7.30 – all helped me sleep better. I no longer woke up tired or wanting more sleep.

I have now started to write something in a gratitude journal every night, meditate a bit and yes I have started switching off the devices one at a time.

  1. I couldn’t agree more, Shalini. I’ve been through this myself. Yes, changing our ways and habits a little at a time can have a hugely positive impact on our energy levels and sleep quality. Gadgets at bedtime are a strict no-no! I’m totally into breathing exercises and yoga, combined with walking which helped me regain my fitness back after going through a difficult time. Sleeping well makes me feel so much better even during the busiest of days now.

    1. Thanks so much Esha – glad you resonate with my post. Sleep is such an elixir of life; very few realise its importance…

  2. My sleep pattern has changed drastically over the past year. It’s the exact same as you described yours in the first paragraph. Even now, it’s 12:49 a.m. and here I am, wide awake, unable to sleep despite having slept for a mere 5 minutes last afternoon. I blame it on my age (43), because I take pretty good care of my health. I practice Yoga, go for a walk after dinner and follow a healthy diet. Guess this one is one of those nights when my sleep eludes me for reasons best known to “it”!

    1. Oh My thats sounds tiring; hope you find your mantra to a peaceful and deep slumber soonest. A disturbed sleep pattern is very tiresome for the mind and body. Maybe the walk after the dinner is the culprit as I have read that one shouldnt do any physical exercise before bedtime. Maybe….

      1. I have read, too! But, I also read how a walk after dinner time helps digest the food and also helps you sleep well! So, there are nights I sleep like a log, and there are nights I am up like an owl! 😛
Guess I inherited it from my mom who goes through the very same problem! 🙁

  3. I am an early riser so make it a point no matter how much work I dont overstretch for the night because once I do that I get my mornings spoilt and also the productivity. I exercise or play tennis to destress.

  4. Currently I can’t even think of a routine! I work at crazy hours because i can’t find any peaceful free time to work during the day. I am dealing with the lack of sleep even when my son is a good sleeper at nights!

    1. Ohhh Thats not good to hear Tina. Sleep is so important overall for ur. I hope you find your rhythym soonest and settle into it 😉
