Accessory2design recently attended the opening of Mora taara store which was organized by the ladies at Gurgaon Network – a highly popular Facebook forum for such dos.
Mora taraa literally means “My Star” when translated from Hindi to English. It’s also the name of a quaint but sprawling 4000 square feet store on the first floor of the shopping complex in the Galaxy hotel complex in sector 15, Gurgaon. It has recently been re-launched with a facelift cum expansion and additions of newer brands and items.
We loved the curious way of curating the items – so much thought and attention has been given to the beauty of items along with the user preference and practicality of everything. Each and every shelf is a treasure trove of surprise in color, pattern, texture, genre of the items placed there. So, one finds a sedate yet elegant brass bull mingling with ease with the exuberance of gaily painted/patterned papier-mâché eggs.
The entire store is a colorful mélange of digitally printed textiles in bright colors and vivid patterns. Kitschy auto rickshaws, swirling paisley, bold English prints can seen vying for attention in form of bags, pouches, cushion covers, phone cases, mouse pads, and more. Bold patterns and eye-popping colors on wrapping sheets, customized gift boxes, block printed paper bags make for an interesting gift packing solutions in an innovative way.
The wide range of ceramic wares makes for an eclectic collection of platters, mugs, jars, vases, bowls, planters – each beautifully patterned / textured / painted. One is tempted to shop for all in the first glance at the shelves.
Gorgeous wooden screens with intricate jaali work make for a sumptuous screens or room –dividers; or on their own can be mounted onto a wall and lit from behind to make an interesting focal point in the room. We loved the bell-shaped lamp shade which is molded from bamboo and then mounted onto a sturdy metal frame which is made delicate with the swirling stem like shapes in it.
The inventory gets creative with the introduction of scented candles, incense and diffuser oils, and some very interesting food items which are in such a bright colorful packaging that one wonders if that’s why they have found a place in the store! So we have sweet wine vinegar, organic fusion of teas with some interesting combos of spices and flowers in them.
And then there is the shoes and clothing range along with jeweled accessories and match ups.
With such a wide selection of items, the store could very well be vying for the tag of “ the complete woman” – creative, colorful, bold and beautiful with unexpected delights!!!!
A2D caught up with Anuradha Kumar to know more about the store, brand philosophy and future plans.
GENESIS
It is named after my grandmother Tara, who used to live in a small village in Rajasthan. In village homes the rough, hand-done walls with their natural textures were gorgeous. The smooth bamboo lathis behind each door to chase away aggressive monkeys who walked the terraces with impunity every afternoon. The unpolished kota stone bed in my grandmother’s courtyard, the vintage clocks inside every home in the neighbourhood, the old prayer books, the worn soft bed covers with their faded patterns. Nobody had formal upholstery; but beauty was abundant.
JOURNEY
I worked as a journalist for 9 years before starting Mora Taara in 2005 with the unstinting support of my father. Starting it was inevitable, because I have wanted a shop of my own ever since I was four or five years old. I have attempted to create a store that is a warm, bustling, welcoming space, filled to the brim with gorgeous products. An aspect of Mora Taara which is very important to me is that it
should not be intimidating to most people at the price level – our product price range starts very modestly so that there is something for everyone.
NEW BEGINNINGS
In this new store, which we have re-launched in a bigger space in July 2015, we have attempted to
create a space that delights all five senses. We have beautiful products to touch and see, a whole new clothes and accessories section, a gift food section and an aroma section. We will also be adding our selection of favourite and inspiring books because the aim is for Mora Taara to become a place where people go back not only with things but also ideas.
